The Hiring Experience

A good candidate and prospective employer experience starts at the very beginning of the process.

  • Application

  • Subsequent communication

  • First and second interviews

  • Timeframe and process around decision making

  • Job offer

  • Right through to their first months in a new position and beyond.

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m big on this process.

Resigning from one company and moving to another is a big deal.

How someone feels during this process is also a big deal.

When there is communication and genuine engagement it will leave a positive impression on candidates and prospective employers, regardless of whether they are a yes or a no. It also has a wider impact on well-being when feeling like you have been acknowledged in a process where applying for a job can be a big decision.

Impressions are everything in a competitive job market so I’ve listed below what my top 5 must-haves are:

Positive First Impressions: from the first interaction, everyone should feel welcomed, valued, and respected. When there is clear communication, understanding of the role, and transparency around the hiring process it contributes to positive first impressions.

The Interview Process: having a streamlined and prepared interview process shows that you respect each other’s time and interest. Engagement needs to come from both parties by asking questions about each other’s expertise and experience, and also involving any relevant stakeholders contributes to a positive experience for everyone. Each party needs to ask the questions required to provide them with an understanding of each other.

Transparent and Timely Communication: effective communication throughout the hiring process is important. This is where I sometimes see things going wrong. After being interviewed, candidates and prospective employers should provide feedback, whether that is a yes, maybe or no along with providing some context around the decision. No communication is not good for either party. Upfront and transparent communication is. It fosters trust, reduces anxiety, and enhances the overall experience for everyone.

Onboarding and Integration: once a candidate accepts an offer, making that change is something that needs to be valued and respected by both parties. Upon acceptance of the offer through to the first few months in a role, the onboarding process commences. Usually ensuring any relevant documentation is provided along with any access to necessary resources enables new employees to transition smoothly into their role. Also, providing ongoing support, regular check-ins, and access to a buddy or mentor can also help foster a sense of belonging.

Long-term Engagement: the employee experience also extends beyond the initial onboarding phase. Regular feedback and interaction, understanding of career drivers and how to foster these, to having a positive work environment all contribute to long-term engagement. Regular check-ins, especially during the first few months on the job, help address any concerns or challenges, ensuring a successful transition for the new employee and employer.

A good employment process experience enhances both the employer and employee brand and helps in reducing turnover. Investing in a seamless journey from the first interview through to the initial months on the job not only benefits new employees but also provides significant advantages for employers in today's competitive job market.
