Gen Z and the Workplace

There can be a lot of misunderstanding around Gen Z (1997-2012) with regard to what they are looking for in the workplace, but really, it's not that complicated.

Previous generations can compare this generation to themselves but by learning to embrace what Gen Z brings to an organisation or team, we will be all the better for it.

Gen Z has a whole new way of looking at work and life and actually, it makes sense.

Working effectively with Gen Z in the workplace requires an understanding of their unique characteristics, values, and communication style.

Here are some tips that may help with collaborating effectively with Gen Z colleagues:

Embrace technology: Gen Z has grown up in a digitally connected world. Be open to learning from them about new technologies and trends and get them involved in any implementation, training and engagement required.

Offer flexibility: this generation values work-life balance and the freedom to work remotely or with flexible hours. Whenever possible, accommodate flexibility in work schedules and locations.

Provide consistent feedback: Gen Z appreciates regular feedback on their performance. Schedule frequent catch-ups, provide constructive criticism by ensuring it's not a problem but something to learn from and don't forget to praise for the work that is being done well.

Encourage professional development: Gen Z are eager to learn and grow in their careers.  This can be done by providing opportunities to develop new skills, attend workshops, or take on new challenges.

Create a sense of purpose: Gen Z wants to make a positive impact on the world. Demonstrate how their work contributes to the company's overall mission and social responsibility by encouraging a company culture that values diversity, inclusion, and sustainability.

Encourage collaboration: this generation is team-oriented and enjoys working with others. Create opportunities for collaboration, group projects, and team activities.

Establish trust from the beginning: Gen Z values authenticity, genuine connections and trust. Build trust through open communication, empathy, and understanding alongside being infinite-minded. Don’t just see the here and now by focusing on their future and how they can grow with you.

Leverage their strengths: understand the unique strengths of Gen Z colleagues, such as their creativity, adaptability, and tech-savviness by embracing and encouraging collaboration and the sharing of ideas.

Providing mentors: Gen Z can benefit from the guidance and experience of more senior colleagues. Establishing mentors to help facilitate knowledge-sharing and connections with others can bring lots of benefits. Alongside helping to guide and view any challenges and setbacks as opportunities to learn and improve, rather than be viewed as obstacles.

Adapt your communication style: as a generation that primarily communicates digitally, review your communication style by utilising various methods like messaging, email, and video conferencing to engage more effectively.

By understanding and embracing the unique qualities of Generation Z, you can create a more inclusive, productive, and innovative workplace that benefits all generations.
